John Lanser - The Dunbar: Sydney’s Shipwreck Tragedy

The Dunbar arrived off Port Jackson on the night of 20 August 1857 in a rising south-easterly gale and poor visibility.

Shortly after midnight breakers were sighted and Captain Green swung to starboard, inadvertently taking his ship closer to the cliffs. Now on a lee shore, the vessel was carried against rocks and within minutes began to break up. All 63 passengers and all but one of the 59 crew perished
